Endicia was founded in 1982 as PSI Associates, a technology
consulting company based in Palo Alto, California.
In the late eighties, the company began developing
software products for address verification and mail management.
This led to the 1989 release of our first software product, Envelope Manager,
which later became (and remains) a corporate standard at the U.S. Postal Service.
That same year, the company also received the U.S. Postal Service's
Quality Supplier Award, and took on the Envelope Manager
Software name.
The Dial-A-ZIP system, the first remote address
verification system, and the Personal Postage system, a hardware/modem based
electronic postage system, were invented and submitted for patent protection
in 1989 and 1991, respectively. In 1994, both patents were issued. In 1991,
the Personal Postage system prototype was presented at a U.S. Postal Service
meeting in Washington DC during the brainstorming years of the USPS Information
Based Indicia Program. The Dial-A-ZIP system became the first Internet-based
address verification system in 1996. The Virtual Postage Meter, a second
generation Internet-based version of the Personal Postage System, was invented
in 1997 and awarded a patent in 1999.
DAZzle, the first WYSIWYG mailpiece design tool in the industry, was released
in 1992. This
one-of-a-kind utility collected rave reviews in 1993 and 1994 from Windows
Magazine, Wordperfect for Windows, PC Today, and PC Laptop. It received the
Win100 award in 1994. Today, DAZzle is the mailpiece design tool included
with all Endicia Software products, and is the client software
distributed with Endicia Internet Postage. DAZzle has over 60,000 users and
has been re-branded and sold by many partners, including the Parson Technology
Catalog, Secap USA, and Kirk-Rudy.
PSI formed a partnership with Microsoft in 1997 to
produce a suite of next-generation mailing software. Direct Mail Manager, released as part
of Microsoft Office 97 and Office 2000, and DAZzle Express, a sister
application offering advanced mail sorting options, were both developed
by Endicia. These products broke new ground for mailing
software by providing the first wizard-like interface in the mailing industry.
Endicia Internet Postage, the first Internet postage service to offer
Electronic Delivery Confirmation, was launched in 2000 and has been at the forefront
of shipping technology since. Endicia was the first Internet Postage service to support
International Mail (2001), the first service to support Electronic Signature Confirmation (2002),
the first to support Stealth (hidden) postage, and the first to support automated Customs
Forms (2004). Endicia was also the first, and remains the only, Internet Postage service for
Mac users. Endicia for Mac was introduced in 2004.
In 2004 Endicia won the prestigious Industry Star Award at the National Postal Forum. The
award, presented to Chief Development Officer Harry Whitehouse, is given to those
companies who have demonstrated a commitment to successful business partnerships
with the United States Postal Service.
2005 was a year full of new postage solutions, as Endicia introduced PictureItPostage, a
personalized postage service and LabelServer, an API that enables postage-paid shipping
labels and increases package shipping options for 3rd party applications.
