Postal Rate Changes
On May 14th, new postal rates and classifications will take effect as the US Postal Service implements its latest rate case. Prior to that date, your Endicia software will auto-update to a new version which includes the new rates. Please allow this update to be performed when you are prompted. The software will use the old rates before May 14 and will automatically switch to the new rates from that date forward.

While the update will be implemented seamlessly, there are significant changes to the USPS’s pricing structure that you need to be aware of. In this special edition of the Endicia newsletter, we will summarize the major rate changes that will most likely affect you. We’ll also suggest a few tips to help you control your costs under the new rates.

PRIORITY MAIL
Box dimension illustration. Attention to Dimension
Although the Priority Mail rate change is mostly straight forward, a new dimensional weight has been introduced for parcels larger than a cubic foot in volume going to zones 5-8 (over 600 miles). This is in addition to the balloon rate that applies to parcels more than 84 inches in girth going to zones 1-4 (under 600 miles). Your Endicia software automatically computes the zones and rates, but it's up to you to know and enter the dimensions of your package if it's large.

Now more than ever, it is essential to pay attention to the size of your boxes to control your costs. Since all the standard USPS Priority Mail packaging is smaller than 1 cubic foot, not subject to dimensional weighting, and provided free of charge by the USPS, it pays to use it whenever you can.

INTERNATIONAL MAIL
International Mail. Simpler is Better
The current set of eight International Mail classes will be consolidated into the following four classes:
  • Global Express Guaranteed
  • Express Mail International
  • Priority Mail International (replaces Global Priority Mail, Global Air Parcel Post, and Economy Parcel Post)
  • First-Class Mail International (replaces Airmail Letter and Economy Letter)
The USPS also introduced a new flat rate box for Priority Mail International and a flat rate envelope for Express Mail International that promise great savings to mailers.

Plus, Endicia users will be eligible for online postage discounts of 5-10% on certain International Mail classes with stealth postage.

FIRST-CLASS MAIL
First-Class Mail shapes. Shape Matters
First-Class Mail rates will be split into three categories, based on shape and rigidity: letters, flats, and parcels. Electronic Delivery & Signature Confirmation are still only available for parcels in First-Class Mail. While rates will go up dramatically for light flats and parcels, the prices for letters weighing over 1 ounce and large envelopes weighing over 6 ounces will actually decrease.

Despite the substantial rise in rates for some weights and shapes, First-Class Mail remains a bargain compared with the 1-lb rates from private carriers.

HARRY'S HINTS
Even though most rates are going up, there are things you can do to lessen the impact of these changes on your bottom line. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your shipping budget:
  • Use the free USPS Priority Mail and Express Mail packaging. Not only will you save money on supplies, but you'll also avoid oversize and dimensional weights.
  • Re-examine all your packaging to minimize the size of your boxes while keeping your product safe during shipping.
  • Take advantage of the online discounts that will be available to Endicia users for International Mail. You'll save 5-10% on postage.
  • Use the flat rate envelopes and boxes available for Priority and Express Mail both in the US and internationally. If you are using a private carrier for international shipping, you should definitely consider the savings of the Flat Rate Box for Priority Mail International.
  • Make sure you pay close attention to your package dimensions to avoid underpaying for postage. The last thing you want is to have your package show up postage-due at your customer's doorstep.
Rate changes are never fun, but we hope this information will help you be better prepared.
