Introducing the USPS Automated Package Verification system

Endicia Customer Email NewsletterThe USPS will soon launch its new Automated Package Verification (APV) system to streamline how they validate paid postage for packages. Starting August 15, the USPS will begin using this new technology to help identify packages that have overpaid or underpaid postage amounts.

APV only affects domestic shipping labels with a USPS Tracking barcode. First-Class Mail Envelopes and Flats, and postage stamps will not be affected.

With APV, the USPS will verify the weight, dimensions, package type, and entry ZIP code for packages processed through USPS sorting facilities.

What does this mean for Endicia shippers?

If the package characteristics assessed by the APV system don’t match the postage paid (for example, if a shipper entered a piece weight of 1 pound, but the actual weight is 2 pounds), instead of rejecting the package or delivering as “postage due,” in most cases the USPS will deliver the package without delay and debit the sender’s postage account for the underpaid postage. The account will be credited for any packages identified as having overpaid postage.

Once the APV system goes into effect, you can log in to your Endicia account and find pertinent APV adjustment details on the new Adjustments tab, under the Account Transactions report.

To learn more about the APV system, visit our APV FAQ page or contact the USPS by emailing VerifyPostageHelp@usps.gov.
