Avoid Common Shipping Mistakes: Tips for Accurate Postage Payments

USPS is committed to helping our customers ship quickly and easily. Accurately paying postage ensures the best experience for both you and your recipients. Underpayment may result in the recipient being charged for postage due and may delay delivery. Below are tips and tricks for avoiding underpayment when shipping with USPS.

Make sure you are not underpaying on postage.

Follow these easy steps to avoid having insufficient postage on your packages.

• Round up on weights: USPS rounds up on weights to either the pound or oz. where applicable. For example if you have a package that weighs 3 lbs. 5 oz., it should be rated at 4 lbs. If you have a First Class Package that weighs 7.3 oz., it must be rated at 8 oz. This is true for all classes of mail -- domestic and international.
• Verify the mail class: First Class parcel service can only be used for packages under 13 ounces, anything over the weight limit must be shipped as priority mail.
• Check the dimensions: Similar to other mail carriers, Dimensional weight may apply to your packaging. For domestic priority mail, it may apply for packages with volume over a cubic foot. Always entering your package''s dimensions will ensure you are accurately charged for Dim Weight. You can find more information on Dim Weight here.
• Double check the zone: Verify that the origin address is up to date in the PC postage software before printing the label.
• Match the label to the packaging: USPS provides a wide range of shipping options to help you meet your mailing needs. Make sure that the label you are using matches the packaging. For example, if you are using a flat rate box, you should use a flat rate label. The same goes for priority packaging, anything in a priority mail box requires a priority mail label.

By following these easy steps, you can ensure that you receive the best possible mailing experience.

USPS Price Change: Introducing Zone-Based Pricing for Shipments to Canada

USPS has introduced zone-based pricing for Priority Mail International packages traveling to Canada. Rates are now determined by the U.S. origin ZIP code and Canadian destination postal code.
